Application Process

  1. How do I obtain an application and learn of application deadlines?

    Please refer to the Office of Undergraduate Admission's timetable. You have the option of applying online or through the mail. Please note that students who apply online will receive more information faster than students who apply through the mail. Feel free to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission for more information and/or U.Va. brochures.

  2. How important is the legacy tie in the admission process?

    There are multiple components of the application; the academic pieces (e.g. curriculum, grades) are considered the most important. The legacy tie is a positive supplement to your application. Being a legacy is not reason enough to gain admission to U.Va.; students who get accepted to U.Va. does so on his/her own merit.

  3. What is the application process for legacies?

    The process is the same for all applicants, regardless of legacy status. Legacy status is indicated in the space where students are asked to list their parent's biographical information.

  4. Should I send any materials (resume, recommendations, etc.) to the Alumni Association?

    Please speak with a member of the Liaison staff before sending anything.

  5. Are there any scholarships available to legacies?

    Yes, the Alumni Association offers the Legacy Scholarship, which is a $5,000 renewable scholarship for first-year legacy applicants to an undergraduate school at the University of Virginia.  Read more information here.

  6. Does it help if I have multiple family members who have attended U.Va.?

    You are considered a legacy whether you have one alumni parent or two. Neither the depth (generations) nor breadth of your alumni family ties affect your legacy status.

  7. Is the legacy tie considered at all in the Admission process?


    Yes. Parental degree information is noted in both undergraduate applications - regular decision and transfer.

  8. What influence does the Alumni Association have in the application process?

    The Program has no role in the decision-making process.  We believe the value of our program to be the information and point of contact we can offer legacies.

  9. What percentage of legacies are admitted?

    The legacy offer rate varies from year to year, but roughly lies between 45-50%, while the total offer rate at U.Va. is between 30-35%. While legacies are admitted at a slightly higher rate, it is important to note that in the last several years almost one-half of legacy applicants were not admitted to U.Va.

  10. If I'm applying as a transfer applicant, will the classes I am taking at my current college transfer to U.Va.?
