Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
General
What admission service does the Alumni Association provide for alumni?
The Admission Liaison Program (ALP) provides a point of contact and a source of information for alumni families who have children applying as a first-year or transfer applicant to one of U.Va.'s four undergraduate schools.
Who qualifies for legacy status?
Children of all University of Virginia degree recipients are considered legacies during the undergraduate admission process. Step-children residing with a step-parent who has a U.Va. diploma are also considered legacies.
What can the Alumni Association's Admission Liaison Program offer me?
The ALP is an additional resource for legacy applicants; it is meant to complement, not replace, the services provided by the U.Va. Admission Office. After conducting some initial research about U.Va. and other college choices, students and alumni may use our office as an additional resource. The director and assistant director of the Admission Liaison Program meet with alumni and their high school-age children.
Does the Alumni Association assist legacies who are applying to a graduate or professional school at U.Va.?
The Alumni Association is a resource for legacy applicants to the University's four undergraduate schools. Because U.Va.'s graduate schools are autonomous, each school has its own admission process and own policies regarding legacy consideration. For more information, please contact the admission office of the specific graduate program.
What services does the Alumni Association's ALP offer?
Daily legacy information sessions
Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday our office hosts a Legacy Information Session. The Alumni Association's Legacy Sessions (located in Alumni Hall) are scheduled at 9:00 AM as we encourage visiting families to attend the 10:00 general information session and student-led tour offered by the Office of Undergraduate Admission. The legacy information session covers the role of the ALP in the admission process, legacy admission statistics and a discussion of the basic elements of a competitive legacy application. It is important for both the parent and the child to attend.

30-minute individual meetings
After attending a legacy information session, alumni families may schedule individual meetings with the Director or Assistant Director of the ALP. The Director or Assistant Director will spend 30 minutes with the legacy and his/her parents. The student brings a copy of his/her high school's profile (a handout containing information about the school; the guidance office normally has these) and an unofficial copy of his/her transcript so that we can have a concrete discussion about the student's record.
Annual Alumni Family Weekend
Every June, the Alumni Association and the U.Va. Admission Office co-sponsor Alumni Family Weekend. This program lasts a day and a half and aims to give participants a better understanding of all the factors that affect an admission decision at a competitive institution. Sessions include a panel discussion featuring admission deans from a host of colleges and universities, a workshop on effective essay writing and a mock evaluation of admission cases. Participation in the program has no bearing on a candidate's admission to the University. The program is offered because we think the weekend is informative and valuable for families engaged in the college search process. Alumni Family Weekend is scheduled for June 19-20, 2009. Online registration will begin January 2009.
