VAAN Mission

VAAN is a collaborative effort by the Undergraduate Admission Office, U.Va. Clubs and the Alumni Association to extend and complement the recruiting efforts of our Undergraduate Admission Office. Through the VAAN program, volunteer alumni reach out to prospective students through person-to-person interaction in 5 geographic areas: Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, New York and Tidewater.

Progress Report

During the months of September, October and November, two new alumni volunteers have been trained, and nine students have requested informational meetings. Four of the meetings have been completed successfully, but we were surprised to learn that two of the students who requested meetings never responded to a volunteer’s contact. In an effort to involve more students in the program:

• The Alumni Association and the Office of Admission are partnering together to reach out to guidance counselors in the five target cities.
• Outreach counselors will continue to take brochures with them when they travel to target cities.
• The Outreach Office will include a VAAN brochure in each of the packets it sends to students living in one of the target areas who signed up for Fall Fling, but were unable to attend.

We continue to learn as we move through this pilot period. We recognize that in our effort to reach students we have had difficulty reaching in the past, the process can be slow, but we are encouraged by the program’s positive reception.  We encourage you to share information about VAAN with your U.Va. friends who might be interested in getting involved.
