Since 1838, the Alumni Association has endeavored to "strengthen and expand in every proper and useful way the University of Virginia and its work, and to develop, strengthen, and utilize the bonds of interest, sympathy, and affection existing between the University and its alumni and among the alumni themselves." Main activities of the Association include publication of Virginia: The University of Virginia Magazine; sustenance and support of a club system throughout the world; upkeep of records on more than 140,000 living University alumni; housing and supporting the U.Va. Fund; and other activities.

U.Va. fields 25 intercollegiate sports, competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The University has one of the nation's highest graduation rates for student-athletes: 84 percent graduate within six years. Since 1948, the Virginia Athletics Foundation and its contributors have provided all the grant-in-aid funds for student-athletes at the University of Virginia. All funding for these scholarships is contributed by generous private individuals, foundations, and businesses.

In 1980 a group of non-alumni parents, recognizing the University's need for expanded external support, formed the Parents Program of the University of Virginia Fund.
