Daphne Page MacDougall, ’99 COLL

MacDougallI graduated from UVA in 1999 with a BA in Anthropology, concentrating in Archaeology – but don’t be fooled, a summer session digging in Central America cemented my status as an avid researcher, otherwise known as an “armchair archeologist.” I loved every minute of my 8 short semesters at the University, and tried to get involved in a range of groups and activities, including First Year Players, Alpha Chi Sigma (the national chemistry fraternity), and I enthusiastically joined the staff of the Biltmore Grill, fully embracing Corner life.

I moved to Richmond, VA right after graduation and joined the UVA Club of Richmond, and have worked and played with alums in my city ever since. I served as President of the Club for the 2006 – 2007 year, and continue to support the organization as our Membership Chair.

I am currently a Senior Account Manager at Direct Mail Solutions in Richmond, and live outside of the city in Bumpass (that’s right!) with my husband, Will, and our two children Haden and Andi. We are all eagerly anticipating the arrival of a baby brother this fall!

In this capacity, I fundraise for the McIntire Annual Fund and manage McIntire's young alumni programs. My professional experience began in DC as an Economic Analyst at a law firm working in a risk arbitrage practice where my background with Prof. Elzinga's antitrust class was essential.  I was hired on as a consultant for one of our clients, The Gold Group, with whom I still work about 15 hours a week.  My real passion now though is with a national literacy organization called First Book where I have been for two years helping to distribute new books to children from low-income families.  I will soon be joining the class of 2006 at Harvard Business School.

Marc Olsen, ‘01 COMM

OlsenHaving no choice but leave the University (i.e. being forced to graduate) in 2001, I decided that entering the real world was too daunting of a task and headed to Europe for a graduate degree in business.  After attaining a master’s degree at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden, where I spent more of my time traveling than actually studying (completely ignored my thesis until the last month), I returned to the States to enter the arena of financial consulting in Atlanta, Georgia.  Down south, I currently work for an M&A/Valuation boutique, Taylor Consulting Group, as a Director in the Valuation Services Group, where I specialize in the areas of business enterprise valuation, corporate planning, tax compliance, and strategic analysis.

As to my Virginian heritage, I headed to Charlottesville from the Great State of Wisconsin where I double majored in business (finance) and government.  At UVA, I was active in Resident Staff, Jeff Society, ADAPT, and Sigma Nu Fraternity.  During my fourth-year, I served as Chief Financial Officer of Student Council and Board member of Madison House.  Currently, I am active in the UVA Club of Atlanta, Rotary Club of Vinings, and a local soccer league.

Niko Schutte, '04 COLL, '04 EDUC

SchutteI am currently a high school English teacher and will spend this upcoming, fourth year, teaching at Hillside High School in Durham, NC, and coaching soccer there.  Since leaving the University and beginning my work as a teacher, I have learned how important it is to be a good student, and wish that I had known how to be one while in college.  While at the University I spent as much time with good people as possible, and too little time reading.  I found many things to be excited about and commit myself to, most of which focused, in one manner or another, on supporting the University community in embracing its diversity and making the University a more welcoming place for all students.  Some other activities were more selfish, but taught me a lot.  After graduating, I lived and taught in Charlottesville for 2 years, helping me to understand it more objectively.  I look forward to finding opportunities to help foster the University's growth in the future, and help students live lives beyond the serpentine walls.
