Neal Fox, '09 COL

I graduated from the College in 2009 where I studied Cognitive Science and Math. I spent the following year as a researcher in the E-School (Department of Systems and Information Engineering) studying how neurons in the finger can encode information about texture to the brain. After finishing up there, I took the summer to hike a good portion of the Appalachian Trail before starting my PhD in Cognitive Science at Brown University, where I do research on how the brain integrates many sources of information in real time during language comprehension.

While at Virginia, I was involved with the University Judiciary Committee, the Minority Rights Coalition, Resident Staff, Alternative Spring Break, the Triathlon Team, and I got to live on the Range. I also contributed to several multidisciplinary research projects. I think the most exciting and important thing I did while at the University, though, was to help organize Hoos for Haiti, a coalition of dozens of student organizations and hundreds of students that raised over $100,000 for relief efforts in the months following the devastating earthquakes there in 2010.

I'm currently hard at work on my PhD with a prospective graduation date in the next century (if I'm lucky). In the meantime, I enjoy reading and learning a whole lot, getting away on hiking trips when I can, serving on the Board for the U.Va. Club of RI, and helping organize fundraisers for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kimberly Osagie (Kim), '05 COL

OsagieRaised in Louisiana in a Nigerian household, I am a lover of languages, warm weather, and the spiciest of cuisines. In the end, upon graduating from the University in 2005, I had completed the Political and Social Thought Distinguished Majors program with a second major in English, and a minor in French. During my 4th year, in the midst of finalizing my thesis on depictions of the Black female body in fashion advertising, Teach for America wooed me into the classroom.

In a whirlwind summer, I became a middle school English, Social Studies, and Health teacher of 7th and 8th graders in Harlem, New York. I remained at my placement school for 4 years, while completing my Master's degree in Secondary English Education. After teaching and leading at the middle school level, I transitioned to a new charter high school, where I was a Founding 9th Grade Reading teacher and Middle and High School English Department Head.

Currently, I am happily teaching, leading, and learning in my role as a Founding Professor and Director of Middle and High School Programs at the Relay School of Education. The work is both critical -- as we seek to change the face of teacher training in New York and beyond -- and gratifying -- as we share expert practitioner insights with new teachers. In keeping with the field of education, I remain engaged with my alma mater by serving on the Regional Selection Committee for the Jefferson Scholarship. Additionally, I am a proud participant in Black Alumni Weekend, and a supportive alum of the Black Voices Gospel Choir, University Singers chorus, University Guide Service, and WU.Va. radio news department.
