The success of the Council depends largely on the leadership, enthusiasm, and dedication provided by the Council's members. These volunteers generate initiatives and activities, while the Alumni Association's staff works diligently to implement the endeavors.

Committee members' responsibilities generally include the following:

  • Active participation on one of the Council's committees.
  • Active participation in Council-related activities.
  • Represent the Young Alumni Council, the Alumni Association, and the University whether they are on Grounds or in their respective community.
  • Attend semi-annual meetings in Charlottesville* (Homecomings and April), as well as participate in occasional conference calls as scheduled by individual committees.

*Newly selected members are required to attend a summer orientation meeting in Charlottesvile the summer immediately following their selection in addition to the two other annual meetings.

Members serve for a term of three years and may be eligible for re-election to an additional three-year period at the expiration of their first term. From its inception, the Council has attempted to be a dynamic, proactive group. Each member is expected to be active and willing to take on responsibilities related to the goals of the Young Alumni Council.

YAC Member Testimonials

“I joined Young Alumni Council immediately after graduating in 2007. Serving on the Council appealed to me as a way to remain involved on Grounds and to meet other young alumni with varying post-graduate experiences. Over the past year, I've come to appreciate the role that YAC plays in advocating for all young alumni. The diversity of our members' perspectives not only contributes to engaging conversation, but also allows us to consider the wide-ranging needs of our peers. It's exciting to see our work gain visibility, and I believe that we're on track to change the post-graduation experience for classes to come.” - Alison Tramba, SEAS ‘07

“Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving on UVA's Young Alumni Council. My time at U.Va. provided me the opportunity to meet a diversity of people and create life-long friendships. The Young Alumni Council is a great way for me to give back to an institution that so greatly shaped who I am today.”- Vishal Patel, COL ‘00 | 2008-2009 President, YAC

“YAC has provided me with a great opportunity to give back to the University that has given me so much. I think what makes YAC truly unique is that we formulate ideas to better engage our alumni peers and then are challenged to see those ideas through. We've been able to really make a difference and impact the University and the young alumni experience.”- Chat Razdan, COMM ‘05

“The efforts of the Young Alumni Council continue to grow and evolve to reflect the changing interests and concerns of our fellow young alumni. It is as exciting as it is rewarding to work with such a diverse group of people who are committed to creating impactful programs that foster a strong alumni community for young alumni everywhere, regardless of where their post-graduation paths may lead.”- Samantha (Sam) Satz, COMM ‘06 | 2008-2009 Secretary, Young Alumni Council
